#195 – Scott Norris

Scott Norris

Scott Norris is a photographer, freelance animator and motion graphic designer. Scott recently completed a 365 (or was it 366) photography project where he posted an image and blog entry every day for a year.

Much of what I shoot is done spontaneously. What surrounds me dictates what is photographed.

And shooting is only the first step – a jumping off point. I take the raw images and create what I see in my mind’s eye. Coaxing out textures in the shot – sometimes adding them. Enhancing the contrast of light and dark to create the mood and emotions I felt and feel. In the end, it’s all about listening to my heart and mind, and creating a visual representation of what I feel the moment the shutter is released.

I’m a native Texan currently living on Milwaukee’s East Side with my wife and son.

I use Nikon cameras and lenses, Induro tripods and Lowpro camera bags. For post-processing, I use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom and plugins from Google Nik Effects, OnOne, and Topaz Labs.

    • Tell us about your background and what led you to photography?
      • Unsure when initially interested…1st started in High School when using a Canon AE1 and four years of darkroom.  Studied photojournalism, however, didn’t want to be a journalist.

    • Your 365 project is inspiring.  Why did you start it and how do you come up with an idea every day?  Was it a lot of pressure to produce each day?  Any rules you followed?
      • Wanted to shoot everyday, motivation to shoot
      • Some days were more difficult than others
    • Now that the 365 project is over, do you miss it?
      • Not at first, didn’t have the motivation.  
      • Realized I hadn’t taken a picture in a while
      • Was very time consuming
    • You post a lot of articles on your website
      • Usually if something is going onto the website I like to post a little story behind the photo
    • Do you show your work at Art Festivals?
      • 3-4 years ago participated in an Art Fair, however, realized you need to be committed for the entire summer to determine what sells and how much stock to bring.
    • Tell me about the robot
      • Carry in my bag, have for a long time without remembering where it came from.  Use it as times for inspiration.  The face has a happy and sad side.
    • A.D. Wheeler says you don’t need to leave the yard to find your subjects.
      • I work from home and don’t get to travel often.  Find subjects along the walk around my home.
