  • Is there a Top 10 list or Top 5 list of the most asked questions that come into the help desk?

    • Understanding the Lightroom process…Library and Develop module…hard for people to understand

    • Basic File Management stuff…people sometimes make problems for themselves

  • Any Tips on speed best practices?

    • No one way to use the product.  Multiple tasks can be done at once to save time in the long run.

  • Build Smart Previews? Build Previews?  Best practice when importing

    • Designed to work with having main source files offline and still work in the develop module

    • Secondary benefit…slight performance improvement when first going into file

    • For performance help, Select 1-1 Preview Renders, preloads the RAW photos.

  • How often should we create a new catalog?  Does it impact speed? 100,000+ images

    • Ideal case is one person, one computer and one catalog.  Allows you to leverage the photo database.  While this could impact the performance the hardware will likely be the limiting factor versus the catalog size.

  • There has been a discussion in our groups lately about issues with editing in LR using Pro Photo while the end product will be output in sRGB.  Any tips here?  Color Space?

    • RAW has no color space, captures everything.  Lightroom takes it into 16 Bit and close to Pro Photo.  Your limit is likely the monitor.

  • Another big discussion lately has been if someone should abandon LR and move to Bridge and PS.  Some like Bridge for culling process

    • Recommendation – stick with one or the other.  To see photos 1-1 in Grid mode just hold down on the Z key.

    • Lightroom was build directly for the Digital Photography workflow

  • Keeping organized – Collections vs Smart Collections

  • What feature do you think most users are UNDER using?

    • Customizing defaults to be used as you want.  Example, Camera Profiles.

  • What would you like to see in Lightroom 6?

    • Work done to help people understand the catalog file and the benefits

  • New features in Adobe Camera Raw that are not in Lightroom 5.5?

    • Subscription model, unique as it allows new features to be added to subscription models.  Camera Raw 8.5 released some features such as gradual / radial filter to allow editing with a brush.  Possible release in future Lightroom editions.

  • Presets – easy to get overloaded with tons of them.  Any tricks?

  • Favorite plugin?

Is it better to have this system outside of LR for purposes of backing up? Or does it create a copy of the file structure again inside LR via the catalog

Photos are never part of Lightroom…they are not actually imported or copied.  Photos stay in the original location and Lightroom is just referencing the photo.
