Show #31–Crystal George – Fire and Rain

Host Mike Howard and Tim Kemperle are joined by Photographer Crystal George for Show #31. Kathleen Bowie had the night off, but will be back next week. Crystal shares her creative ideas including her Fire and Rain shoot and some amazing videos on her site.

  • Started out as a painter before photography…did a little without any success.
  • Three friends asked me to take photo of their weddings and a light went off and I fell in love with photography
  • Shutter Wars – Web Show, show in competing in two challenges
  • Reviewed video from CGS…Fire & Rain, music by Adele:
    • The music helps inspire visual photography
    • Story lines…especially something that has not been done previously
    • Takes a lot a planning to put the story together
    • Dragged the door out to the location
    • Rain – Sprinkler upside down on a ladder
      • red rain is a red spotlight
    • Approximately four people assisted at the shoot
    • Hair & Makeup is important
    • Approximately 5 hours on location
    • Post processing 8 hours
    • How much direction is given for posing?
    • The video shoot required a storyboard which made the posing required
  • Equipment – Canon
  • Favorite lens – Prime lens
    • 50/f1.2
    • 85/f1.8
    • 35/f1.4
  • Post processing actions used – Totally RAD,
  • Wedding photos on the beach (couple from the video)
    • One year anniversary
    • Trash the dress session
  • Fly Sessions
    • Boudoir sessions
    • May be easier for a female photographer as some women may be more comfortable than with a male
  • Posing
    • Doesn’t come easy to pose subjects
    • Study fashion magazines
  • “Phantom of the Opera” Shoot
    • Ask the clients what their interests are, sometimes it leads to creative shots
    • Utilize props when needed (chandelier / row boat)
    • Lighting played an important part…late afternoon and candlelight
  • “Queen of Hearts’
    • Ton of props, some are baked goods
    • Bridal Shoot – very big in the South
    • Bride wanted “Alice” but suggested something different
      • Alice without being over the top
  • Questions:
    • Ever had a card fail?
      • Yes, once during a shoot…now have a backup drive for storing photos during the shoot
    • Do you doodle out shot ideas>
      • Storyboards at time
    • Do you hold onto ideas?
      • If I feel it is good and important I will hold on it
    • Number one piece of advice for starting a business?
      • Know who you are as a photographer…who do you want to be.  babies, families, weddings, couples etc.
    • How do you receive critique?
      • Be kind?
      • Art is art and is taken very personally
